Inland waterway vessels have properties that make them a preferred method of transportation for bulk goods traffic. They are spacious, have a favourable payload to dead load ratio, require a relatively small staff and require comparatively little energy for transport. Although they can only use a small transport network compared with trains and lorries, they are an important method of transport, as inland waterway vessels can reach the majority of large cities and a large number of heavy industry and chemical industry plants in Germany.

However, inland waterway travel does have an environmental problem: as positive as the energy balance is, so negative are exhaust emissions, the more so as there are around 1,100 passenger ships on German inland waterways in addition to approximately 4,000 goods ships.

Modern inland waterway transportation therefore must comply with current and future environmental standards, despite its excellent energy efficiency. Soot and nitrogen oxide immissions along the Rhine, for example, which correspond to the values measured on a motorway and reduce green zones in cities along the banks to absurdity, no longer fit into the picture here.
