Many ship operators are already focussing on sustainable nitrogen oxide reduction today, the more so as there are direct or indirect funding instruments in some maritime regions and ports.  As SCR catalysts – unlike particulate filters – are sulphur tolerant to a very high extent in certain variants, these can be used with all standard heavy fuel oils and diesel fuels. Depending on the design and AdBlue® consumption, very high NOx reduction rates can be achieved. The consumption of aqueous urea solution is, however, a considerable operating cost factor that must be taken into account when calculating total operating costs.
